Interview: Seth Resnick on the New d2 and Photography Workflow

Note: Chosen as one of the 30 most influential photographers of the decade by Photo District News Magazine, Seth Resnick is one of North America’s most prolific corporate, editorial, and stock photographers. We interview Resnick to get his first impressions of the new d2 Thunderbolt 2 and how it fits into photography workflows.

LaCie: How have you integrated the d2 Thunderbolt 2 into your workflow?

Seth Resnick: My 6 TB d2 Thunderbolt 2 with the 128 GB d2 SSD Upgrade installed is a game changer for blazing fast workflows. As a professional photographer, my images are my lifeline. I use Adobe Lightroom to catalog, keyword, caption, process, and output my images, and organizing a collection spanning over thirty years is no easy task. It all comes down to reliability and speed and LaCie delivers both. The d2 SSD Upgrade provides a speed boost of 1150 MB/s and I love having dual Thunderbolt 2 ports so that I can daisy chain up to six devices. Lightroom has never worked so fast. On top of all this, the new design is smaller, slick, and makes almost no noise at all.

LaCie: What’s your process?

SR: My Lightroom catalog is on the 6 TB d2 along with all of my images organized in folders by year, with each folder named yyyymmdd_job.

In the field, I take a 1 TB Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 that’s loaded with my catalog. While still in the field, I import new images onto the Little Big Disk, then transfer them to the d2 when I get home.

The strength of the SSD on the d2 is that it facilitates faster file transfers from my Little Big Disk.

LaCie: Do you store anything else on the d2 hard disk volume?

SR: No. I have two other 8TB 2big Thunderbolt 2 for other data.

LaCie: What is your favorite LaCie product(s) and why?

SR: I have several favorites. I would never leave home without my 2 TB Rugged Thunderbolt drives. These are fast and I can fit three of them in the same space as a small lens. I am very OCD about backup when I travel, so one drive holds the catalog and images and stays in a hotel room or tent. One backup stays in my back pocket, and the third one I hide in my camera bag.

I also adore the 1 TB Little Big Disk. I wish it were 2 TB, but even at 1 TB I can carry my catalog and smart previews of all my images and the raw files from any location that I am at.

At home for desktop storage, the new d2 is perfect. Lots of storage, fast, and in a small container.

I am also going to add a 20 TB 5big Thunderbolt 2 as an additional backup – just for extra safety.
